Post 16 capacity

What is the Post-16 Capacity Fund?

The Post-16 Capacity Fund is a government-funded scheme which provides funding to education providers to support them with demographic increases in 16 to 19-year olds. The scheme provides investment to ensure that the recipients can provide appropriately sized learning spaces for students in the ages of 16-19 as well as being able to offer additional places for applicants. On 13 July 2023, the government announced further funding of £185 million for the 2023 to 2024 financial year, and an additional £285 million in 2024 to 2025 financial year to support skills development within education.

Who can apply for the Post-16 Capacity Fund?

The Post-16 Capacity Fund is a government funded support package available to a range of Post-16 institutions, including:

  • Further Education Colleges
  • Sixth Form Colleges
  • 16-19 academies
  • Maintained Schools
  • Free schools
  • University Technical Colleges (UCTs)

How to apply for Post-16 Capacity Funding?

If eligible to apply, educational institutions are required to submit bids for the fund online through the Department for Education’s (DfE) eTendering portal. Once submitted, all bids are marked and assessed by the DfE, with those which score the highest being accepted for funding. The process of creating a successful bid requires a lot of resources and industry expertise, which is where our experienced team is capable of providing support on behalf of educational institutions by submitting bids on their behalf.

How can Post-16 Capacity Funding be used?

In the Government’s guidance to applicants, they have stated that there are two main types of building projects which are eligible for this form of funding, which are to:

  • Increase the gross internal floor area (GIFA) of learning areas or facilities.
  • Alter the estate within the existing GIFA to allow for accommodation of more students.

What can the Post-16 Capacity Fund not be used for?

The Government guidelines for the scheme also state projects which the scheme can not be used for, including:

  • Purchasing of land except where possible to demonstrate high value for money justification.
  • Projects which are not directly concerned with accommodating for the demographic increase in 16-19 year old learners.
  • Estate expansion which is being funded through other government-funded schemes.
