New Government firmly links planning reform with growth agenda
Lydia Pravin, Associate Planning Director, Eddisons, follows-up on the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s assertion in the first week of the new administration.
The new Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, in her first speech, in week one of her new role, clearly set out that planning reform will be crucial to facilitating the nation’s economic growth under the new administration.
The speech outlined the need to build the required infrastructure to enable 1.5 million homes to be delivered over the next five years. The Government has stated this will be through reform to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), including mandatory housing targets, and with consultation before the end of July.
A new Task Force is to be set up to accelerate stalled housing sites - including addressing the need for affordable housing through social rent - with the Cambridge new town of Northstowe mentioned specifically.
It seems the new Government will not be afraid to use Ministers’ existing ‘calling-in’ powers to directly intervene where a development has regional and national benefits in creating more confidence to invest in Britain.
This is combined with, in due course, setting out new policy intentions for critical infrastructure and updating the relevant National Policy Statements within the year.
The Government’s positive growth-focused approach to the planning system is welcomed by Eddisons’ planning professionals, alongside the recognition this will take time to deliver.
