Project
Having worked with Lincoln College before in providing quantity surveying services on a number of its building refurbishment projects, Eddisons incorporating Banks Long & Co was appointed to provide QS cost consultancy services by the college for its brand new Air and Space Institute in Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The £15.4 million campus is an international centre of excellence to provide technology led-learning in partnership with the RAF and air & space industry commercial operators.
Approach
Appointed in Summer 2021, with work beginning on the town centre campus site the following Autumn (2022), the budget was squeezed further by starting at a time of rising construction costs post-pandemic.
Installation of a real-sized commercial aircraft, to supplement flight simulators, within the building was always going to a challenge. Manoeuvring and supporting the installation of the fuselage of a craft with just one wing in the new facility proved a balancing act.
We couldn’t use wheels as support to the undercarriage given the imbalance created by the absence of a second wing. We concluded that the building had to be completed first then we lifted the aircraft from a lorry and lowered it into its position in the building - movements that have not been navigated too often before within a commercial setting.
Results
The project was completed to a revised schedule in agreement with all parties with the state-of-the-art training and education facility opening its doors to students and apprentices in the new academic year beginning September 2024.
Eddisons continues to work with Lincoln College on other projects.
