Project
Eddisons has been appointed by Ellipsis Land to deliver detailed design for all off-site highway infrastructure serving the development of Langley Sustainable Urban Extension in Birmingham. As the largest residential development site in Birmingham, Langley SUE will release land from the Green Belt for approximately 6,000 homes and is driven by the need to create new communities with supporting infrastructure.
Approach
Eddisons is providing detailed infrastructure design for seven access junctions serving the site. The junctions will comprise roundabouts as well as signalised and ghost island right-turn arrangements. A network of dedicated cycling routes around the perimeter of the site (in accordance with the latest LTN 1-20 guidance) will link the strategic access points in and out of Langley, providing much needed cycle infrastructure for the area.
Results
The development will see 6,000+ new homes and 70,000m² of mixed use space. Over 35% of the homes will be affordable, with extra works also comprising a secondary school, three primary schools and circa 90 hectares of interconnected, managed and accessible open space. Construction is intended to start in 2023 and will continue through to 2040.
